Making Your Good Work Impossible to Ignore
A Bite-Size Guide to Workplace Visibility
Every day, people create value in ways that are easy to miss.
They prevent problems before they occur. They remove obstacles, improve processes, support colleagues, reduce risk, and help projects succeed.
Yet many of these contributions go unnoticed, not because they lack impact, but because others never see the work behind the outcome.
This is what I call the Visibility Gap™: the disconnect between the work people do and the work others actually see.
In today's workplace, visibility is becoming more challenging. Remote work, hybrid teams, cross-functional collaboration, and increasingly complex organizations make it harder for contributions to be observed directly. As a result, recognition often follows what is visible, not necessarily what is most valuable.
The Visibility Gap isn't a reflection of talent, effort, or performance. It's often the result of valuable work being hidden behind successful outcomes. When people don't understand what happened, they can't fully appreciate why it mattered.
Signs You May Be Experiencing a Visibility Gap™
You may be dealing with a Visibility Gap if:
❓ Do you consistently deliver strong results but receive little recognition?
❓ Are colleagues surprised when they learn everything you're responsible for?
❓ Do promotion and advancement opportunities seem disconnected from the value you create?
❓ Are you known for being dependable, but not necessarily visible?
❓ Is your work often taken for granted because it is done so well?
❓ Do you frequently hear: "I had no idea you did that."
❓ Have others received recognition for outcomes you helped make possible?
❓ Do you spend more time creating value than communicating it?
If several of these feel familiar, you may be facing a Visibility Gap rather than a performance gap.
Firefighters vs. Fire Preventers
Organizations are often better at recognizing firefighters than fire preventers.
A project goes off track.
A customer escalates.
A deadline is missed.
A system fails.
The firefighter steps in and solves the problem.
Everyone sees the value.
But what about the person who prevented the issue from happening in the first place?
The outage that never occurred.
The escalation that never happened.
The risk that never materialized.
The project that stayed on track because someone quietly removed obstacles before they became problems.
Ironically, some of the highest-value work is measured by what didn't happen.
The challenge is that prevention rarely creates a memorable story. Success often looks like "business as usual."
As a result, organizations can unintentionally reward visible recovery more than invisible prevention.
The work happened.
The value was created.
But the story never traveled.
The Cost of the Visibility Gap™
When valuable contributions remain unseen, both individuals and organizations pay a price.
Lost Opportunities
People may be overlooked for promotions, projects, leadership roles, and career growth opportunities.
Reduced Influence
Good ideas often struggle to gain traction when the value behind past contributions is not widely understood.
Misunderstood Contributions
Others may see the outcome without understanding the effort, expertise, collaboration, or problem-solving that made it possible.
Burnout
High performers are often rewarded with more responsibility rather than more recognition, creating an unsustainable cycle.
Frustration
Few things are more discouraging than knowing you are creating value while feeling invisible.
Over time, the Visibility Gap can affect engagement, retention, morale, and performance.
Closing the Gap
The Visibility Gap™ isn't a performance problem.
It's a visibility problem.
And visibility doesn't require becoming louder, more extroverted, or more self-promotional.
It begins by helping others understand the value behind the work.
When people understand what happened, why it mattered, and the impact it created, recognition becomes more accurate, opportunities become more aligned with contribution, and good work becomes easier to see.
